How to Become a CYS Referee!

If you are a rising 6th grader or older (including high school) and interested in refereeing CYS soccer games, we are looking for more referees for our Saturday City League games. For many boys and girls, becoming a referee is a perfect first job - one that combines a love of soccer with earning a paycheck (you're paid for every game you ref), and learning such important life skills as:

- Maintaining fairness and objectivity
- Communicating/projecting clearly and confidently
- Maintaining focus amidst distractions
- Managing people in difficult situations
- Making good decisions under pressure

How do I become a Referee?

There are a few steps you will need to complete prior to the beginning of the season. Fall 2025 opens on September 13th.

1. Register on the CYS website. And familiarize yourself with the content in the CYS referee section of the website.

2. Join the CYS Referee Google Group to receive timely information for referees throughout each season. Email Yuhgo Yamaguchi, our CYS Referee Coach, to be added to the group: [email protected]

3. Attend one training session prior to the beginning of the season. Attendance is required for all referees, from first-timers to the more experienced. Please bring:
- Referee shirt (if you have one from CYS or your own)
- Whistle (if you have one)
- Pen and small paper pad for taking notes
- Water to drink

Training session dates for Fall 2025:

Session 1: Monday, Aug 25, 5pm to 7pm at Russell Field in North Cambridge (the field next to the CRLS football field).

Session 2: Wednesday, Sept 3, 6-8pm at Russell Field (side field next to football field)

Session 3: Sunday, Sept 7, 4-6pm at the Peabody School (gym entrance on Haskell St.)

4. Take the open book rules test (info coming soon).

What happens once I receive my Referee Credentials?

Once you receive your Referee Credentials, you can request weekly assignments for City League games on the Game Assignments page.

You will also be given a Referee Kit which contains a uniform, whistle, and notebook for keeping score.
